A woman has been found guilty of forcing her 20-year-old daughter to marry an older man in Victoria, Australia, who later murdered her.
Sakina Muhammad Jan was on trial for two weeks after pleading not guilty to forcing her daughter to marry the man in 2019, The Guardian reported.
Australian prosecutors said the daughter, who can only be identified as Ruqia Haidari, told her mother she did not want to marry Mohammad Ali Halimi. She was forced to do so anyway, with her mother receiving a $10,000 dowry.
Prosecutor Darren Renton told the jury the mother believed her daughter had "lost her value" after getting a divorce, which was why she arranged the marriage to the older man.
The pair met on June 1, 2019, when Halimi flew from Perth to Shepparton to meet Haidari for the first time. They had a temporary Islamic marriage ceremony less than two weeks later, and were legally married in August.
Halimi murdered the young woman in her Perth home in January 2020, six months later. He is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum of 19 years.
Haidari had told multiple people she did not want to marry Halimi, including her mother, two driving instructors, a teacher, a counsellor and police, The Guardian reported.
The jury deliberated for more than a day before delivering their verdict on Thursday. However, they were not told about Haidari's murder during the trial.
