At least eight people have died in a fire at a hostel in Istra, in the Moscow region of Russia, on Thursday.

The blaze broke out at 4:00 am (2:00 am in mainland Portugal), The Moscow Times reports, which in turn quotes the news agency Moskva, revealing that the fire was extinguished five hours later.

The Moscow region prosecutor's office said that a 23-year-old unidentified man had rented the two-storey building and had sublet it, mainly to undocumented immigrants.

A criminal investigation into the organisation of the illegal migration in question has been opened after the incident. The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a separate investigation, looking into suspicions of negligent homicide.

The Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, which quotes an anonymous member of the emergency services, revealed that the flames may have started in a fireplace. The people are said to have died as a result of smoke inhalation.
