Reducing the escalation of the war and creating conditions for political dialogue are the basis of the proposal drafted during the visit to China by the special advisor to the presidency and former head of diplomacy of Brazil, Celso Amorim, who met with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi.

In the document, released by the Brazilian presidency, the two countries argue that dialogue and negotiations "are the only viable solution to the crisis in Ukraine" and ask that Moscow and Kiev not create more war fronts, avoid the intensification of fighting and "increase humanitarian aid".

Brasília and Beijing also appeal for attacks against civilians to be avoided and ask for more special protection for women, children and prisoners of war.

In the document, the senior Brazilian and Chinese officials propose holding an international peace conference to be recognized by both parties and appeal to the international community to support all necessary measures to promote the talks.

The proposal comes weeks before the Peace Conference in Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland on June 15 and 16. The event is expected to be attended by more than 70 heads of state, including several Latin American leaders, with the exception of Brazil, Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela.

Russia was not invited to the event, which was coordinated with the Ukrainian government.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, more than two years ago, the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has maintained a position of neutrality and defended a peaceful solution.

He was criticized for blaming both Kiev and Moscow for the war during a visit to Beijing last year.

In a statement released by Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi stressed the importance of the strategic relationship between China and Brazil, which "transcends the bilateral sphere".

The two countries, as "representatives of emerging economies and founding members of the BRICS group", agreed to look to the future with strategic vision, establish new goals to inaugurate a "next golden half century" of cooperation, pointed out the Chinese diplomat, referring to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations, which is celebrated this year.

China and Brazil have "highly complementary" economies and share "similar positions on significant international and regional issues", which constitutes a "valuable strategic asset" and a "political basis for deeper cooperation and mutual trust", defended the Chinese minister.

"It is encouraging to see the joint rise of the countries of the 'global south', represented by China and Brazil, promoting a fairer and more reasonable balance of global power", he said.

According to official data, China has been Brazil's largest trading partner since 2008.

The Chinese market was the destination for 30% of Brazilian exports in 2023, when sales to the Asian country totaled 104 billion dollars (96 billion euros), mostly made up of food products and raw materials.
