"We will soon be welcoming Prime Minister Netanyahu to the Capitol for a joint meeting of Congress," Johnson said Thursday night at a reception at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.

"I think this will be a timely and very strong demonstration of support for the government of Israel in its time of need," the Republican said in remarks on the occasion of Israel's Independence Day.

The Republican invitation to Netanyahu has been denounced as a "terrible idea" by Bernie Sanders, with the left-wing independent senator telling CNN he would boycott a speech by the Israeli leader.

The prospect of Netanyahu addressing Congress has divided Democratic lawmakers, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer saying it represented an attempt by Republicans to use the crisis in Israel for electoral gain.

Tensions between Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden over the Gaza war have been running high, particularly over the high civilian death toll, the difficulty of ensuring access for humanitarian aid and the continued supply of heavy weaponry to Israel.

However, the US administration has opposed a request by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, to issue a warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu and several Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

On Thursday, Biden reiterated that he does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and rejected any comparison between the October 7 firing of rockets at Israeli territory by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Washington has also distanced itself from the decision by Spain, Norway and Ireland to unilaterally recognize the state of Palestine, and has called for such recognition to be negotiated with Israel.

Analysts say Biden's image has suffered among young and progressive voters over his continued support for Netanyahu, while his criticism of the Israeli offensive has alienated more conservative voters.
