Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz has announced that the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem will be banned from providing services to Palestinians in the West Bank.

"I have decided to cut the connection between the Spanish representation in Israel and the Palestinians and to ban the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem from providing services to the Palestinians in the West Bank," Katz wrote in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

"If this ignorant and hateful person wants to understand what radical Islam really wants, she should study the 700 years of Islamic rule in Al-Andalus, today's Spain," he added, referring to the Spanish government's vice-president, Yolanda Díaz, who is said to have made an "anti-Semitic appeal" by speaking of a "free Palestine from the river to the sea" - a reference to the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

The move is in response to the recognition of the Palestinian state, which was announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday.

Following this decision, Israel recalled its ambassador to Spain for consultations, as well as those from Ireland and Norway, who followed suit and issued a warning: "It will have serious consequences".

The diplomatic crisis between Spain and Israel is worsening with the limitation of the activity of the Spanish consulate in the Israeli capital.

Consular delegations provide services to national citizens displaced abroad. Specifically, the restriction covers not only Jerusalem, but also the Gaza Strip, where most of the war against Hamas is taking place, and the West Bank, where the ban applies, explains ABC Spain.
