"The prime minister's condition is stabilizing with a slight improvement. We believe this trend will continue," University Hospital F.D. Roosevelt in Banska Bystrica said in a statement on social media.

Fico was shot four times in the abdomen and limbs on May 15 and underwent surgery after the attack.

The alleged attacker, Juraj Cintula, 71, was arrested at the scene in the central town of Handlova and was remanded in custody after appearing before the Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok.

Cintula has said he did not intend to kill the prime minister but only to "harm his health" so that he would be unable to carry out his duties.

Slovakia's Prosecutor General's Office has allowed details to be released such as the type of weapon used, a 9mm-calibre CZ 75B Luger pistol, which the suspect had legally owned since 1992.

The court document that led to Cintula being remanded in custody also said he had expressed remorse and pledged not to commit a similar act again, although he disagreed with the policies of the government in Bratislava, a coalition of left-wing populists and nationalists.
