The owner of the doll, which belonged to an antique shop in Michigan, USA, lamented the incident, saying ironically: "God had other plans for him".

Drivers along Michigan’s M-83 freeway got a quacking surprise Monday when a giant rubber duck broke free from its usual perch atop Thrifty Treasures Antiques and More and took a “waddle” across the busy highway.

One of the passing motorists captured the moment on video and shared it on social media.

"I bought that duck to get people to stop and take pictures and stuff. It cost me $3,000 (about $2,770) and took me three years to find. Unfortunately, God had other plans for it," the store’s owner, Shawn Mawhinney, told CBC News.

A front-end loader was needed to remove what was left of the duck from the highway after its journey, as the deflated fowl now weighed about 100 pounds.

"We invite everyone to come down and pay their respects and share their memories. Your support means so much to us during this difficult time,” the store joked on social media, where it lamented: “Our hearts are broken … our beloved giant duck, a cherished landmark … has passed away.”
