"Amazing experience". World War II aircraft discovered
The discovery was made after the Richard Bong Veterans Historical Center hired a team to search for the aircraft.

Bong was known for his prowess as a fighter pilot in World War II. In addition to his love of airplanes, the pilot was smitten with his sweetheart, Marge. So, he had her face painted on the side of his plane. But the plane went missing 80 years ago and had not been seen since.
According to CBS News, Thomas Malone was the pilot flying the plane the day it crashed. He was able to eject and survived. Ever since, there has been an effort to find the aircraft with Marge’s face on it.
After multiple searches, crews were able to pinpoint the crash site and then locate the aircraft. The plane had crashed with such force that it had become buried underground. There was some initial uncertainty about whether it was actually Bong’s plane, but the red paint and the serial number, which were confirmed after the wreckage was dug up, clinched the discovery.
“When we found the crash site, it was an amazing experience,” said Justin Taylan, a member of the company that led the search.
Bong is considered by many aviation historians to be America’s greatest fighter ace. He shot down 40 Japanese planes during the war.
