The Al-Fashir Emergency Room said in a statement today, quoted by EFE, that in the last 24 hours 30 people died and 64 were injured, mostly women and children, in the capital of North Darfur state, after an increase in violence in residential neighborhoods and camps for displaced people in and around the city.
One of the attacks targeted the Khatam al-Anbiya mosque, where a boy was seriously injured during Friday prayers - the Muslim holy day - and later died at Al-Fashir South Hospital, the main hospital in the locality and one of the few that is still functioning.
Sources from the Sudanese Red Crescent in North Darfur told EFE today that the clashes continued today with great intensity, taking place mainly in residential neighborhoods, shelters and civilian facilities.
Ahmed Hussein, spokesman for the Joint Forces - composed of the Army and allied tribal groups - said in a statement that in the last two weeks they have managed to "crush" the FAR fighters who have been trying to conquer Al-Fashir for months, although admitting that the siege is not yet over.
According to the spokesman, the paramilitaries are trying to enter the city, while surrounding it and using "heavy weapons" against it.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported today that the clashes in recent days took place in the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people, north of Al-Fashir, as well as in the Al Salam neighborhood and in areas of the southeast of the city, causing the displacement of at least 400 families.
"In addition, seven houses were burned and 15 others were partially destroyed by the clashes," added the UN agency, which indicated that more than 1,500 families have abandoned their homes in Al-Fashir to date.
After two weeks of relentless siege by the FAR, at least 85 people have died and 700 have been injured, according to the UN, which has repeatedly warned of the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation of more than 800,000 displaced people in Al-Fashir.
