"We strongly urge Beijing to exercise restraint. Using a routine, long-standing democratic process as an excuse to launch provocative military exercises risks unnecessary escalation and undermines the long-standing norms that have preserved peace for decades," US spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.

China on Thursday launched a military operation in response to what it called "separatist acts" related to Taiwan's independence and against external "interference and provocations".

It is the fourth time since 2022 that China has resorted to this type of maneuver.

Taiwan's National Defense Ministry located 111 warplanes during the two days of military exercises, 82 of which entered the country's airspace, and 53 Chinese Navy and Coast Guard ships.

Matthew Miller said that these operations represented a "deep concern" for the United States and that they endanger the stability of the Taiwan Strait, thus posing a threat to "regional and global security and prosperity".

The spokesperson also assured that the United States, in coordination with its allies, is closely monitoring these activities by China.

The airstrikes recorded in the last hours are the most numerous since April 2023, when China launched a series of maneuvers around Taiwan, after the meeting between then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and former US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
