Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Portugal this week, after a visit to the Iberian Peninsula was 'on the radar' earlier this month - but did not take place.
The news was reported by CNN Portugal, which says that the Ukrainian head of state is due to arrive in Portugal on Tuesday, a day after visiting Spain. This visit 'revives' the plan for the first visit, since in mid-May, the Spanish Royal House confirmed that it would receive the president.
At the time, Zelensky would meet with King Felipe VI and also with the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to sign a bilateral agreement. According to Spanish publications, citing sources close to the organisation of this visit, Zelensky will meet with the same officials and sign the bilateral agreement.
Contacted by Notícias ao Minuto about Zelensky's visit to Portugal, both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency of the Republic declined to comment.
It should be recalled that in mid-May, the Minister of Defence, Nuno Melo, confirmed, when questioned by journalists, that the visit of the President of Ukraine to Portugal was "being prepared", without giving further details about the date or programme of the trip. "The visit is being prepared with the necessary secrecy and we will see, very shortly, how everything will happen," said the minister on 14 May.

Lusa | 12:42 - 14/05/2024The following day, also the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was asked if he was disappointed about the cancellation of Zelensky's visit to Portugal, but the head of state said: "We cannot talk about cancellation, because his visit had never been confirmed. It was an initiative involving several countries that, apparently, was being studied, but it was never confirmed".
It should be recalled that the visit to the Iberian Peninsula had already been confirmed by the Spanish Royal House, but was cancelled due to developments in the war in Ukraine, at a time when Russia intensified its attacks.
