'Shocking escalation': Toronto Jewish school targeted in shooting, no injuries
A Jewish girls’ school in Toronto, Canada, was shot at early Saturday but no one was injured, police said, amid tensions over the conflict in the Middle East.

Shortly before 5 a.m. (1000 GMT), shots were fired at the Bais Chaya Mushka girls' school in the city's north end, Toronto police Detective-Sergeant Paul Krawczyk told a news conference.
The suspects got out of a dark-coloured vehicle and "discharged a firearm at the school, causing damage to the front of the building," he said.
Police will increase their presence in the area, as well as at other schools and synagogues, he added.
"We're not going to ignore the obvious, which is what occurred here and who the intended target was," Krawczyk said. "But at the same time, it would be wrong to speculate at this point in time," he added.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford denounced on social media a "heinous act of anti-Semitism" and the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre (FSWC), a Jewish human rights group, said it was horrified by the shooting.
"This shocking escalation of violence targeting innocent Jewish children should serve as a wake-up call to political leaders in our city and across our country," said FSWC CEO Michael Levitt.
In November, a Jewish day school in Montreal, Quebec was targeted by two shootings in the same week, though no one was injured.
The war in Gaza began on July 8 after Hamas militants tunnelled into Israel and killed soldiers, triggering an Israeli military operation that has killed at least 35,903 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Israel says its air strikes target Hamas, which it accuses of using civilians as human shields.
