The cyclonic storm is expected to cross Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal by 8pm today, the Indian Meteorological Department and airport authorities said. It is likely to make landfall with maximum sustained wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (75 miles per hour), gusting to 135 kilometres per hour, over Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh on Sunday evening, the Indian agency said. This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal ahead of this year’s monsoon season, which usually begins in June and lasts until September. Most coastal districts in West Bengal are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, and a storm surge of about one metre (3.3 feet) is likely to inundate low-lying areas of the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts. Such storms can uproot trees and cause extensive damage to thatched houses and power and communication lines, the statement said. India’s coastline is frequently hit by cyclones, but changing weather patterns have made them more intense, adding urgency to disaster preparedness.
