At an event organized by his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lai Ching-te said his inaugural address last Monday reiterated that “peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are indispensable to global security and prosperity.”

In the speech, Lai recalled that he had “also urged China to jointly shoulder with Taiwan the important responsibility of regional stability.”

“I also hope to strengthen mutual understanding and reconciliation through exchanges and cooperation with China [...] and move toward a common future of peace and prosperity,” Lai said.

“Any country that makes waves in the Taiwan Strait and undermines regional stability will not be accepted by the international community,” he added.

Lai was sworn in as Taiwan’s President on the 20th of this month, under the watchful eye of Beijing, which considers the island as one of its provinces, which it has not yet managed to reunify with its territory since the end of the Chinese civil war and the coming to power of the communists on the mainland, in 1949.

However, China was offended by the new Taiwanese president’s inaugural address.

In particular, Lai Ching-te stated that “the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China (mainland China led by the Communist Party) are not subordinate to each other.”

Beijing considers these statements to be separatist and, in response, China carried out military manoeuvres around Taiwan for 48 hours on Thursday and Friday.

The ‘Joint Sword-2024th’ exercise aimed to send a signal of disapproval to the authorities of the island territory, which is claimed by Beijing.

On Sunday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence said it had detected seven Chinese aircraft, 14 warships and four Chinese coast guard vessels “around” Taiwan in the 24 hours prior to 6:00am local time today (10:00pm Saturday in Lisbon).
