Gantz Presents Proposal for Commission of Inquiry into October 7 Attack
Israel's Defense Minister Benny Gantz today presented a proposal to establish a state commission of inquiry into the failures that led to Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7.

If approved, the commission would be tasked with examining all the decisions made by the security establishment, as well as the various government ministries, at the political, military and intelligence levels before, during and after May 10, which led to some 1,200 deaths and the capture of 250 people.
The commission is also expected to look into whether Israel adhered to international law during its offensive in Gaza, which could help shield Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant from an arrest warrant that International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan requested last week.
Tensions between Gantz and Netanyahu have been running high in recent weeks, most recently after the former threatened to quit the security cabinet if the latter fails to approve a post-war plan for Gaza by June 8.
It is unclear whether the proposal will be discussed at a meeting of the security cabinet later on Monday, which has been officially called to discuss efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages held in the Strip.
"The security cabinet is set to convene in Jerusalem on Monday evening [9 p.m. Israel time] to discuss a prisoner exchange deal," an Israeli official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official noted that the meeting was taking place as efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory resume, after more than seven months of a devastating war between Israel and Hamas.
