Weapons? Salvini asks Stoltenberg to resign if he doesn't "retract"

The Italian deputy prime minister today demanded the resignation of the secretary-general of NATO unless he "retracts or apologises" for suggesting Ukraine should be allowed to use western-supplied weapons to strike Russia inside its own territory.

"You can talk about war, you can talk about using the bombs or the missiles or the Italian weapons that we send to Ukraine to defend themselves in their territory, but you cannot talk about fighting, attacking and killing outside their territory, you cannot do it in my name, in the name of the League (his party) or in the name of the Italian people", said Matteo Salvini.

The leader of the League, quoted by the EFE news agency, stressed that it is necessary to "defend Ukraine under attack". "We have been doing this since the first minute, but we are not at war with anyone".

"I do not want to leave the third world war at the door of my children, so NATO cannot force us to kill in Russia, nor can anyone force us to send Italian soldiers to fight or die in Ukraine. Defending is one thing, killing is another. Therefore, this man either apologizes, rectifies or resigns", he reiterated.

NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg proposed, within the framework of the right to self-defense "enshrined in the United Nations Charter", the possibility of Ukraine attacking within Russian territory and assured that this is "legal", as long as they are "military and legitimate objectives", according to EFE.

"It is time for the allies to consider whether they should lift some of these restrictions imposed on the weapons they donated to Ukraine, because we must remember that this is a war of aggression by Russia, that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and that this includes attacking targets in Russian territory", said Stoltenberg.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who has already rejected this proposal, also said today: "We do not want the weapons sent from Italy to be used beyond the borders of Ukraine".

"Therefore, I want to reiterate that we are not at war with Russia, nor will we send our soldiers to fight in Ukrainian territory. However, we defend Ukraine's right to independence", he added.
