"There are countries that are hesitant, not because they don't want Palestine to be a State, but because they think it will be the end of the peace process. Recognition is the right decision, it is part of the peace process", said Mohammad Mustafa, at a joint press conference with the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, in Brussels (Belgium).
Addressing countries of the European Union (EU) and others, such as Portugal, that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine, the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority said that the peace process "is a reason to support recognition", instead of falling into hesitation.
Mohammad Mustafa recalled that the State of Palestine is "a promise of peace that the Palestinian people have been waiting for 30 years".
"It is the right thing to do so that the two-state solution remains viable", he argued.
The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority considered that the recognition of the State of Palestine by Spain, next Tuesday, will be a "special day for Palestine, for justice and for Humanity".
"We welcome Spain's courageous decision, which has once again demonstrated its unequivocal commitment to the two-state solution", said Mohammad Mustafa, adding that "it demonstrates the importance of recognising the Palestinians' right to self-determination".
And he reinforced the initial idea: "It is the only way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region. Spain's recognition is in line with international law and all United Nations resolutions".
"The Palestinian government, once again, appeals to all States that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine to do so as soon as possible", he added.
The Palestinian Authority was established in 1994 as the governing body of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, following the Oslo Accords, which provided for the creation of two States in the disputed territory.
