"The agreement, whose negotiations had the ample participation of Colombian society, represents an important step forward in the consolidated vision of the Mexico agreement to overcome the conflict and build a future of peace," said the Brazilian executive in a statement.

The "Agreement for the Development of the Process of Participation of Society in the Construction of Peace" was signed by representatives of the Government and the ELN.

The inclusion of citizens represents the first point of the six that both parties established in the agenda of the peace agreements, whose dialogue began about a year and a half ago.

In this agreement, the parties also undertake not to abandon the negotiation.

Peace negotiations between President Gustavo Petro and the ELN were resumed in 2022 in Venezuela, after four years of suspension.

Brazil, which is part of the dialogue table, together with Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Norway and Venezuela, "reiterates its confidence in the progress of the dialogue and renews its willingness to continue supporting the Colombian people in overcoming violence and building sustainable peace".

Since 2022, the negotiators have held six rounds of meetings in Caracas, Mexico City and Havana.
