"Unfortunately, 16 deaths have already been recorded," said the governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleg Synegubov.
An earlier report by the Ukrainian Interior Ministry also reported 43 injured and 16 missing after the attack.
"For them [the Russians], it is a pleasure to burn. We all know who we are dealing with," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.
The fire that followed the attack took more than 16 hours to extinguish.
The Russian state agency Tass quoted a Russian security source saying that a missile attack destroyed a "military warehouse and command post" in the building.
The United Nations condemned the attack and called for protection for the civilian population of Ukraine.
Also on Saturday, three hours after the attack on the hypermarket, Russia launched missiles at a residential area in the city center, injuring 18 people.
The city of Kharkiv, which had 1.5 million inhabitants before the war and is located near the Russian border in northeastern Ukraine, is frequently attacked by Moscow's forces, which launched a ground offensive in the region on May 10.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today invited his US counterpart, Joe Biden, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to participate in a peace summit to be held in Lucerne (central Switzerland) on June 15 and 16.
The conference will take place in Lucerne, central Switzerland, and more than 160 delegations have been invited, but not Russia, which denounces that the peace formula presented by Zelensky implies a capitulation of Moscow.
President Biden has not confirmed his visit and China, which has not commented on its participation, has said it supports an international peace conference recognized by both Russia and Ukraine.
