The Saudi news agency said the government had appointed Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as its new ambassador to Syria, who said he wanted to “strengthen bilateral ties between the two brotherly countries”.

The move comes almost a year after the two countries restored diplomatic relations, and after Syria, led by President Bashar al-Assad, was readmitted to the Arab League in May 2023.

Saudi Arabia, which once backed Syrian rebel groups at the start of the country’s civil war, closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012.
