Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet on Monday in Madrid with the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, with whom he is expected to sign a bilateral security agreement, and will have a meeting with the king before attending a lunch in his honor and visiting Congress, the Spanish agency EFE reported today. According to El País, cited by EFE, the bilateral security agreement includes the supply of military equipment ranging from Patriot missiles to Leopard battle tanks, in addition to a wide range of Spanish-made products, such as artillery shells, anti-drone systems and portable rocket launchers. The newspaper adds that the agreement involves contracts worth millions of euros for the Spanish defense industry, since the military equipment will be manufactured by Spanish companies such as TRC, Indra, Escribano, Uro, Expal and Instalaza. Monday's visit will be Zelensky's first official bilateral visit to Spain, although he was already in Granada last October for the summit of the European Political Community, within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council. The visit, initially scheduled for May 17, but which had to be canceled due to the Russian offensive in Ukraine, was only officially confirmed at the beginning of the evening today by the Moncloa Palace, for security reasons. The Spanish executive limited itself to informing that Sánchez will receive the Ukrainian President at Moncloa at 12:00 (11:00 in Lisbon), after which both will appear at a press conference. Shortly after this communication, the Royal Household informed that Felipe VI will receive Zelensky at the Royal Palace at 2:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. in Lisbon) and 45 minutes later a lunch will be held in his honor. Meanwhile, sources from the Presidency of Congress told EFE that the Ukrainian president will visit the Chamber of Deputies during the afternoon. Sánchez and Zelensky are expected to sign the bilateral security agreement at Moncloa that both should have signed on May 17 and which the President of the Government referred to in Congress last Wednesday, when he assured that it would be signed when circumstances permitted. In the agreement, similar to the one that Ukraine is signing with other countries, Spain undertakes to continue providing military support to Ukraine in its armed conflict. Sánchez has been reiterating Spain's support for Ukraine, as he confirmed to Zelensky in the telephone conversation they had on May 7, in which he guaranteed that support for as long as necessary. At the time of the visit announced for May 17, the Ukrainian President's visit to Portugal was also planned. On Saturday, during a visit to the headquarters of the Food Bank Against Hunger, in Lisbon, the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was asked about a possible visit by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to Portugal on Tuesday. "I can only confirm one thing for Tuesday: that I will receive the President of the Dominican Republic on a state visit. It has been scheduled for a long time," replied the Head of State, adding: "That is what is on my agenda for Tuesday, if you know more than me, I would be very grateful for the information".
