"An aircraft targeted a Hamas compound in Rafah, where senior Hamas terrorists were operating," the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that it was "aware of reports according to which a number of civilians in the area were harmed."

The Palestinian presidency, however, accused Israel of deliberately targeting a centre for the displaced near Rafah, killing at least 35 people, according to Hamas authorities who govern the territory.

"This heinous massacre perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces is a defiance of all international resolutions on legitimacy," the Palestinian presidency said in a statement, accusing Israel of "deliberately targeting" a camp for the displaced.

Hamas also called on Palestinians to "rise up and march" against the Israeli military.

"In light of the horrific Zionist massacre committed tonight by the criminal occupation army against the tents of the displaced, we call on the masses of our people in the West Bank, Jerusalem, the occupied territories and abroad to rise up and march in anger," the Palestinian movement said in a statement.
