Chaos and death. The aftermath of the Israeli attack on the Rafah refugee camp

The Israeli military carried out strikes in the so-called "safe zone" of Rafah just hours after Hamas fired a barrage of rockets toward Tel Aviv, causing no serious damage or injuries. Dozens of people were killed, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

The Israeli military left a trail of destruction in a camp for the displaced in the northwest of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, in an attack carried out at dawn on Monday, in which at least 50 people died. Israel confirmed the attack and claimed that it targeted two senior Hamas officials.

"Another atrocious massacre was committed by the Israeli forces in Rafah, which has so far claimed the lives of 50 martyrs and left dozens wounded, most of them children and women", declared a spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health.

The Israeli military confirmed the airstrike on the Tal al-Sultan area, "based on precise intelligence" and targeting two senior Hamas officials, Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar.

"The Hamas wing in Judea and Samaria [occupied West Bank] is responsible for planning, financing and executing terror attacks throughout Judea and Samaria and inside Israel," reads an Israeli military statement about the attack on Tal al-Sultan, a neighborhood that Israeli forces had not yet ordered to evacuate and that was home to hundreds of displaced people.

The images - which you can see in the photo gallery above - show a large fire caused by the aerial bombardment of tents, while people at the scene try to put out the flames.

"We are aware of reports that, as a result of the strike and the fire that was started, several civilians in the area were injured. The incident is being reviewed," the military also said about the attack.

According to Israel, Yassin Rabia "managed all Hamas terror activity in Judea and Samaria, transferred funds for terror targets and planned terror attacks," including in the past, namely in 2001 and 2002, at the height of the Second Intifada, "in which IDF soldiers were killed".

About Nagar, Tel Aviv says that he "directed shooting attacks and other terror activities in Judea and Samaria, and transferred funds intended for Hamas terror activities in the Gaza Strip".

In addition, Israel continued, he carried out several attacks between 2001 and 2003, which resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians and soldiers.

"Never before in history have so many instruments of mass death been used in front of the world, as is happening now in Gaza, where the population is deprived of water, food, medicine, electricity and fuel, destroying the infrastructure and all institutions," denounced the Gaza Ministry of Health.

According to this department, in the last 24 hours, 190 Palestinians have been killed in new massacres, including this one, in the so-called "safe zone" of the camps west of the city of Rafah, he added.

It should be noted that, on Sunday, the Palestinian Red Crescent had already begun to denounce a attack on a humanitarian zone, near the UN headquarters in Rafah. Shortly after, the Israeli military confirmed that it had launched attacks on a Hamas complex in that area, admitting to having injured civilians.

It should be noted that this attack on Rafah occurs after, also yesterday, Hamas fired eight 'rockets' from this point in the Strip against central Israel, including Tel Aviv, for the first time in about four months, without causing serious damage or injuries.

Several images began to circulate on social media after the sirens warning of the launch of 'rockets' were heard in several Israeli cities.

The spokesman for the Palestinian National Authority also condemned the "deliberate attack by the occupation army" against the tents of the displaced in Rafah, causing a "massacre that exceeded all limits".

In the West Bank, hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets in several cities, including in critical locations such as Jenin and Tulkarem, in protest against the attack.
