"Once again, it was confirmed that the denuclearization of North Korea and the stability of the Korean Peninsula are the common interests of the three countries," Fumio Kishida said.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol added that the issue is "a shared responsibility and interest" of the three countries.
The comments came after the ninth trilateral summit between China, Japan and South Korea. The first such meeting in more than four years is seen as a positive sign in easing tensions in northeast Asia.
Ahead of the meeting, Pyongyang informed the Japanese coast guard that it will launch its second spy satellite as early as Sunday, in violation of UN sanctions.
Seoul says the North is receiving help from Moscow with its space program in exchange for providing weapons to Russian forces in Ukraine. In November, Pyongyang put its first spy satellite into orbit.
Yoon and Kishida urged Pyongyang to cancel the launch, which Yoon said would harm "regional and global peace and stability" and warrant a "resolute" response from the international community.
"We reaffirmed our positions on peace and stability in the region and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," the leaders said in a joint statement, adding that they would "continue to make positive efforts toward a political resolution" of the issue.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang called "on all parties concerned to exercise restraint and avoid further complicating the situation," according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
China is North Korea's biggest trading partner and a key diplomatic ally. It has in the past refused to condemn Pyongyang's weapons tests and has criticized joint military exercises by Washington and Seoul.
