Americans are used to the occasional unwanted alligator visitor in some states, but someone always ends up being hailed a hero for dealing with them, which is no easy feat. This time, in Georgia, it was the turn of police to make an unusual 'arrest' after an alligator turned up on someone's driveway.

Chatham County Police Department shared footage of the moment, which happened on May 25 near Savannah, on social media, saying: "When an unwelcome visitor showed up in this neighborhood Thursday, our officers Blackledge and Stapleton sprang into action."

The alligator was captured, put "in the back of a patrol car", and released "back into the wild".

The footage - which you can see in the gallery above - shows the officers restraining the reptile's mouth shut with duct tape before putting it in the back of their vehicle to transport it.

A number of amused social media users commented on the post, with one joking: "Did they read him his rights?"

"Poor gator. I've been in the back of one of those myself," another joked.

Others praised the officers for their bravery, with one saying: "Thank you again" and another adding: "Wow great job getting that gator!"
