Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended on Monday that "it is more necessary than ever" to increase support for Ukraine, after signing a bilateral security agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which includes a military aid package of one billion euros. In turn, the Ukrainian head of state thanked "all the help" from this "reliable partner" and confirmed that he "plans" to visit Portugal.

"Since the beginning of the Russian aggression, Spain has been on Ukraine's side," said Pedro Sánchez, at a joint press conference, after signing the agreement.

"After more than two years, the Russian aggression continues, so it is more necessary than ever to redouble our support. In this context, Volodymyr, your visit allows us to reiterate our firm commitment to Ukraine in all areas," added the head of the Spanish government, renewing his "commitment to contribute to the security and defense of Ukraine" and announcing that the agreement "includes a commitment of military aid for 2024 of one billion euros".

Noting that Spain is the tenth country to sign such an agreement with Kyiv, in accordance with the G7 declaration issued last year, Sánchez stressed that it is based "on a global vision of security and, therefore, extends to various areas, such as the military, financial support or collaboration in the field of military industry and aid for the reconstruction of the country".

This aid package focuses, above all, on the delivery of Patriot missiles for anti-aircraft defense and Leopard tanks.

Sánchez reiterated the support of the Spanish Government for Ukraine and said that its fight for its "freedom and independence" is an example for those who believe "in democracy, peace and equality between States".

Zelensky began by thanking the Spanish people for their "affection and respect" for supporting his country and all the "help that has saved lives in this difficult period of war".

"Spain is a reliable partner that has helped us defend ourselves since day one," he said. "They did not remain indifferent when Russian missiles began to destroy our cities and villages and kill our children," he added.

The Ukrainian president explained that he took advantage of the meeting to inform Sánchez about the current situation on the front line and that they had discussed, in particular, the strengthening of air defenses in his country. Zelensky also described Spain's participation in the Conference for Peace in Ukraine, which will take place in Switzerland in two weeks, as "historic".

Finally, the Ukrainian head of state confirmed his visit to Portugal. "Yes, I plan to visit Portugal," he told reporters.

It should be recalled that the Ukrainian president arrived in Madrid today for an official visit. Zelensky was received on the runway of the Madrid airport by King Felipe VI. This is the first official visit by the Ukrainian President to Spain, although he was already in Granada last October for the summit of the European Political Community, within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).

The visit, which was initially scheduled for May 17 but had to be canceled due to the Russian offensive, was only officially confirmed at the beginning of the evening by the Moncloa Palace for security reasons.

It should be noted that, at the time the first visit to Spain was scheduled, the Ukrainian president's visit to Portugal was also planned. On Saturday, during a visit to the headquarters of the Food Bank Against Hunger, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was questioned about a possible visit by the President of Ukraine to our country on Tuesday, but without confirmation.

Today, after several news reports and after Zelensky's official confirmation, the Presidency of the Republic and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, also ended up communicating that the Ukrainian head of state will be in Portugal tomorrow. During his stay in Portugal, Zelensky will have working meetings with Montenegro and will be received by Marcelo.

On Monday afternoon and after this meeting with Pedro Sánchez, Zelensky will be received by Felipe VI, with whom he will have lunch. The Ukrainian president will also visit the Chamber of Deputies during the afternoon.

It should be noted that the military aid provided by Madrid to Kyiv remained limited until today's agreement, which implies a total donation of 1,129 million euros in equipment and military aid.

According to data from the Kiel Institute, which records the weapons promised and delivered to Ukraine since the Russian invasion of February 24, 2022, Spain had provided 330 million euros of military aid to Kyiv up to that point, making it a small contributor on a European scale.
