"Our soldiers are defending themselves against the Russian offensive and that's why we have to intensify our joint work with our partners to achieve more: security and tangible coercion of Russia for peace by all necessary means," Volodymyr Zelensky said at a press conference in Madrid, alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Ukraine, which is struggling in several sectors of the eastern and northeastern front lines, demands to be able to attack Russian positions and rear bases in Russian territory with Western weapons, a claim that the Americans and Europeans have refused so far, fearing an escalation of the conflict, and that has given a clear advantage to the Kremlin forces (Russian presidency).
Kiev also wants its allies to provide it with more air defense systems to deal with Russian bombings, arguing that it currently has only a quarter of the resources it needs.
In the Spanish capital, Zelensky stressed that Russia launches more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs over his country every month, namely from its territory, and that if Ukraine had more anti-aircraft equipment, namely the American 'Patriots', the Russian Air Force would no longer be able to approach and drop so many bombs.
"These bombs are used by Russia from its planes and, if we have modern systems, 'Patriot' systems, these planes will not be able to fly so close to use these bombs against civilians and the military," he argued.
"We are asking the world to help us by providing at least seven additional 'Patriot' systems. We need at least two systems for Kharkiv," Zelensky added.
Kharkiv is the country's second largest city, about 40 kilometers from the Russian border, and has been bombed by Russian attacks in recent months.
According to Zelensky, "there are enough 'Patriot' systems in the world", but the countries that have them are often reluctant to hand them over for "fear" that Kiev will use them to intercept targets inside Russia.
"We have to work together and put pressure not only on Russia, but also on our partners, so that they give us the possibility to defend ourselves from Russia," insisted the Ukrainian head of state.
The target of a new Russian offensive since May 10, the Kharkiv region and its eponymous capital have been subjected to multiple bombings, which have destroyed, namely, part of the energy infrastructures.
After the visit to Spain, Zelensky will travel to Portugal on Tuesday, where he will meet with the Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and with the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, the Portuguese Presidency announced today.
"At the invitation of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, will travel to Portugal tomorrow [Tuesday], May 28," reads a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
