"Police have arrested 33 people so far who are being investigated," after on Saturday an angry mob attacked two Christian homes in the Mujahid neighborhood, in the city of Sargodha, Punjab province, said Muhammed Abid, spokesman for the local police, quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE. About ten people from two families were in the two houses when the group of Islamists broke into them, violently attacking them, expelling them and trying to set the houses on fire. The owner of one of the houses, Nazir Masih, and his son, whose name was not revealed, were taken to hospital to treat injuries from "torture" perpetrated by the mob of Islamists. The police spokesman also indicated that two separate complaints were filed following the attack, one for alleged blasphemy and the other for violence. One of the complaints, that of blasphemy, was filed against Nazir "for desecrating the Koran and burning it," the official revealed. The crime of blasphemy was established in law in the British colonial era and aggravated by the dictator Mohamed Zia-ul-Haq in the 1980s, and is punishable by the death penalty in Pakistan, although no one has ever been executed for it. In August 2023, thousands of people set fire to churches and homes of Christians in the city of Jaranwala, in Punjab province, after local residents accused a young man belonging to the Christian minority of committing blasphemy. Before that, in December 2021, a group executed and then burned the body of a Sri Lankan citizen in the city of Sialkot, in northeastern Pakistan, for alleged blasphemy.
