A 51-year-old man died after he was struck by lightning while feeding cattle on a farm in the US state of Colorado on Sunday.

The same lightning strike also killed 34 animals, US broadcaster ABC News reported.

The incident occurred as Mike Morgan was working on a farm, feeding several animals around a bin filled with hay.

When lightning struck the open field, about 100 head of cattle were knocked to the ground. “All but 34 got back up,” said George Crocket, the county coroner.

The incident occurred outside the town of Rand, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) northwest of Denver. Two other people — Morgan’s father-in-law and his wife — were nearby when the lightning hit the field, but they survived the incident.

Crocket said the incident has shocked a small community where nearly everyone knows each other.
