"In Rafah, we removed a million uninvolved residents, and despite all our efforts, yesterday [Sunday] a tragic incident occurred. We are investigating what happened and will draw conclusions," Netanyahu told the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, at a hearing with families of some 130 hostages held in the Gaza Strip, who are demanding an immediate deal for their release. "Since December until now, I have received five requests from the [peace talks] negotiating team to extend its mandate, and I approved each one of them," Netanyahu told the families. The prime minister's office announced last week that it had authorized the negotiating team to resume talks in Cairo, expected to take place on Tuesday, although the leadership of the Islamist group Hamas insists that no deal is possible unless Israel agrees to end the war, something Netanyahu rejects. "[Yahya] Sinwar [the Hamas leader in Gaza who is said to have masterminded the 7 October 2023 attacks] is the only obstacle," the Israeli prime minister said. On Sunday, an Israeli air strike set fire to a camp for the displaced in the southern Gaza Strip, killing at least 50 people - nearly half of them women, children and the elderly - and injuring 249, according to Palestinian authorities. The European Union (EU), the United Nations and several countries condemned the attack. The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by an attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israeli soil on 7 October 2023, which caused about 1,200 deaths and left some 200 hostages, according to the Israeli authorities. Since then, Israel has launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has caused more than 36,000 deaths, according to Hamas, which has governed the small Palestinian enclave since 2007. Rafah, on the border with Egypt, is the main crossing point for humanitarian aid to Gaza and where more than a million displaced Palestinians from other parts of the territory have taken refuge. Despite international appeals, Israel is maintaining its military action in Rafah, where it says the last active units of the Palestinian extremist group Hamas are located.
