The leader of the UPA, Pavlo Sadokha, told the Lusa agency today that the demonstration is scheduled for 7 pm in front of the Belém Palace, where at the same time the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has a dinner planned with his Ukrainian counterpart. According to Sadokha, this is "a welcome demonstration" to Zelensky and also to send him "a message of support", after more than two years of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. This community is one of the most expressive in Portugal, where it is estimated that over one hundred thousand Ukrainians reside, in a contingent reinforced shortly after the invasion of Moscow troops with 59,532 Temporary Protection titles for refugees, according to data from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), of which 1,566 have already requested the cancellation of their respective title. The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, will be in Portugal on Tuesday, being received by the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, accepting an invitation made in August 2023. According to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet, released simultaneously by the Prime Minister's office, "President Zelensky's working visit is part of the shared intention to deepen the excellent relations between the two states, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defense". "During his stay, the President of Ukraine will have working meetings with the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and will be received by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa", adds the text. According to the same joint note, this visit by Zelensky "will also be an opportunity to reiterate Portugal's commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as to maintaining political, military, financial and humanitarian support for Kiev". Today, the President of Ukraine, during his visit to Spain - which was scheduled for May 17, but was canceled - also confirmed that he will visit Portugal. Zelensky's trip takes place at a time when Russia has intensified its offensive in eastern Ukraine and has opened a new combat front in the northeast, in the Kharkiv region, since the beginning of May, in addition to the intensive bombings against the country's vital infrastructure and that also hit civilian targets. The Ukrainian leader continues to insistently ask for military support from his Western allies to counter Russian superiority in terms of personnel, weapons and ammunition. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, said today that an agreement will be signed on Tuesday in the presence of the President of Ukraine, which systematizes all the support provided by Lisbon in the last two years and covers the next ten. "The political agreement between Portugal and Ukraine was concluded about three weeks ago, which is a bilateral agreement in all areas in which we have cooperated in these two years", said Paulo Rangel in Brussels, within the scope of a ministerial meeting. The agreement, signed on the occasion of the visit of the President of Ukraine, includes "humanitarian, financial, military, political assistance" with regard to the process of integration into the European Union.
