"The ministers agreed to ask for an Association Council with Israel, something we had not achieved in previous meetings," said Josep Borrell, at a press conference at the end of a ministerial meeting, with the participation of the Portuguese Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, in Brussels (Belgium).

The deterioration of relations between the Middle Eastern countries, exacerbated by the Israeli invasion in the Gaza Strip, was the main topic of today's discussion and Josep Borrell said that "there is unanimity" to request a meeting with Tel Aviv and that all ministers "were horrified" with the latest images available from Rafah.

On Sunday, Israel bombed a displaced persons camp in Rafah, allegedly the last stronghold of the Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza.

According to a provisional assessment by the Palestinian authorities, at least 50 people died.

"In Rafah, we removed one million inhabitants who were not involved and, despite all our efforts, yesterday [Sunday] a tragic incident occurred. We are investigating what happened and we will draw conclusions," said today the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to the parliament.

The 27 will discuss with Tel Aviv "the respect for human rights and the obligations" that Israel assumed before "the Association Council, and how it plans to implement the decision of the International Court of Justice [ICJ]", which demanded the end of operations in Rafah and the opening of humanitarian corridors.

"Israel [...] not only did not cease military operations, but also increased them," criticized Josep Borrell.
