"The crew of the Humanity 1 rescued a total of 100 people, including pregnant women and babies, from two overcrowded and distressed boats in the central Mediterranean," the NGO revealed on its social networks, quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE.

In the first rescue, the team saved 82 people who were in a boat and in the second another 18, with "half of the people rescued being minors," the organization added.

The Italian authorities asked the NGO to head for the port of Livorno, which is about 1,170 kilometers from the rescue area, so that the migrants could disembark, the NGO also denounced.

"The crew and the rescued people will now have to face at least three more days of travel. By designating such a distant port, the authorities are consciously violating the survivors' right to a prompt disembarkation, as indicated in maritime law," it accused.

The captain has already asked the Italian rescue coordination center to assign a closer port, especially because by having to travel so many kilometers they end up moving away from the usual rescue areas.

EFE recalls that the decision to assign distant ports has been the policy of Giorgia Meloni's far-right government to remove NGOs from the rescue zone.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, about 150 migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa after being rescued by the Guardia di Finanza in several operations.

The boats, which left from Tunisia, were also carrying two women and 17 minors, who said they were from Egypt, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia.

The improvement in the weather is increasing the number of people trying to reach Europe via the Italian coast, which this year has seen 19,592 migrants arrive, a number much lower than that recorded in the same period last year (47,851 migrants), according to data released today by the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
