“We are horrified by the attacks that killed Palestinian civilians in Rafah. The death of innocent civilians is completely unacceptable. (...) That is why there must be an immediate ceasefire,” Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said in the Canadian Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Chilean government also condemned the attack by the Israel Defense Forces, which killed at least 45 people and left hundreds wounded.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry of the South American country urged Israel to respect international humanitarian law and to implement the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice, namely to “immediately suspend its military offensive in Rafah and allow the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance.”

A few hours earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the attacks, which “killed dozens of innocent civilians who were simply seeking shelter,” warning that “there is no safe place” in the Gaza Strip.

“I condemn the actions of Israel, which killed dozens of innocent civilians who were simply seeking shelter from this deadly conflict. There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop,” the Portuguese diplomat stressed, in a note on social network X.

According to the Palestinian authorities, the Israeli bombings of a displaced persons camp in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, caused at least 50 deaths on Sunday.

The Israeli attack occurred hours after eight rockets were fired at Tel Aviv from Rafah.

The armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas said it had fired “a large barrage of rockets in response to the Zionist massacres against civilians.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the attack in Rafah “targeted a Hamas compound, where key operatives” of the Islamist group “were operating.”

Today, the Israeli government promised to investigate the attack by its military forces.

“We will investigate the matter. It was indeed a serious matter. Any loss of life, of civilian life, is a serious and terrible thing,” said Avi Hyman, spokesman for the Israeli government, during a press conference, insisting that Israel continues to try to “limit civilian casualties.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the airstrike, which was widely condemned by the international community, “a tragic incident.”

On October 7, 2023, an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israeli territory caused about 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to the Tel Aviv authorities.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry said today that the number of people killed by Israeli fire since October 7 has risen to 36,050, while the number of wounded has risen to 81,026.

In addition, the ministry recalls daily that more than 10 thousand bodies remain buried under the rubble, without ambulances or rescue teams being able to access them.
