The first commercial flight arrived today at the Canoas airbase, located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, which in the coming months will become the closest air terminal to this city, the most important in southern Brazil.

Porto Alegre airport has been closed since May 3, due to the floods that have caused at least 170 deaths in southern Brazil.

Although the Canoas base was already being used to receive humanitarian aid shipments, it has now been adapted to receive commercial flights.

Passengers have to board and disembark at a shopping center located three kilometers from the base, from where they are transported by bus.

The tragic floods that hit several cities in southern Brazil a month ago left the Salgado Filho international airport flooded and inoperable.

More than two million people were affected by the floods, which caused 169 deaths and 630,000 displaced people, while 56 remain missing.
