Two snow leopard cubs were born last week at the Toronto Zoo in Canada after a 97-day pregnancy. Three-year-old Jita is doing "remarkably well" as a first-time mom.

The cubs, sired by nine-year-old Pemba, were born after several hours of labour. The birth was captured on remote cameras. The first cub was born at 7:45 p.m. on May 13, while the second arrived in the early hours of May 14, the zoo revealed in a social media post.

"Jita is doing remarkably well as a first-time mom and has been diligently nursing, grooming and cuddling her little 'snowballs,'" the post reads, adding that the animal care team is "closely monitoring the new family via CCTV cameras" in order to "minimize any disturbance."

For now, the mother and her cubs are "not yet visible to zoo guests."

The snow leopard species is rarely seen in the wild and is listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
