The seizure was made in the rural community of Boca de Sábalos, in the municipality of El Castillo, department of Río San Juan, on the border with Costa Rica, the Spanish news agency EFE reports.

The police stopped a man who was traveling on a mule and pulling another animal that was carrying two red bags, said Victoriano Ruiz, chief of the National Police, in statements to local journalists.

When he noticed the operation, the man, whose identity is unknown, fled riding an animal, leaving the load behind, the police report said.

In the bags, the police found around 1.3 million euros wrapped in 50 rectangular packages covered with adhesive tape, the police chief added.

The confiscated money has already been subjected to tests that have tested positive for cocaine, according to the National Police, which continues to investigate to identify the citizen and clarify the origin of the money.

The authorities assure that they are implementing a strategy known as 'Containment Wall' in order to prevent the circulation of drugs or money linked to trafficking in population centers.

Nicaragua is geographically located in a major drug trafficking corridor that is produced in South America and then transported to North America, where Mexican cartels mainly operate and where the main consumers reside.
