Police official Rahul Alwal said rescue teams have recovered the bodies of those killed in the stone quarry in Melthum, about six kilometres from the state capital Aizwal, and managed to pull out two workers alive from the debris.

Alwal said teams were continuing to work through the rubble to try to reach trapped workers and were searching for more survivors.

India's northeastern states have been battered by heavy rains after tropical storm Remal made landfall in Bangladesh on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department has warned that the heavy rainfall could damage vulnerable structures, such as thatched houses, and trigger landslides in the region.
