Belgium will provide Ukraine with 30 F-16 fighter jets by 2028, with the first aircraft expected to arrive before the end of this year, Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said on Tuesday.

"Belgium undertakes to transfer 30 of its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by 2028," Lahbib was quoted as saying by RBC-Ukraine, adding that the first plane could be delivered by the end of 2024.

According to the minister, the first fighters will be transferred to Ukraine by the end of the year and this commitment will be officially formalised in a security guarantees agreement, which will be signed today by Ukraine and Belgium.

The Belgian Defence Ministry will also transfer ammunition from its stocks to equip the F-16s in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will sign a bilateral security agreement with the Belgian Prime Minister on Tuesday morning in Brussels, before travelling to Lisbon to sign an agreement with Portugal, according to government sources.

The trip to Brussels comes after Zelensky visited Spain and signed a security agreement between the two countries, which "includes a commitment to provide military aid for 2024 of one billion euros that will allow Ukraine to strengthen its capabilities," Sánchez said during a joint press conference.
