"The Palestinian Presidency welcomes the brave and courageous European political positions, especially those taken by Spain, Ireland and Norway which recognized the State of Palestine," Abbas said in a statement carried by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Spain, Norway and Ireland have committed to formally recognising Palestine as a state from today, joining more than 140 countries around the world to have done so as Israel presses on with a military offensive in the Gaza Strip that began in October.

The conflict was triggered by an upsurge in violence on 7 October 2023 when the Islamist group Hamas fired rockets into Israel, killing one Israeli and wounding two, according to the Israeli authorities.

Israel subsequently launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip which has killed more than 36,000 people and caused a severe humanitarian crisis, according to Hamas, which has controlled the Palestinian enclave since 2007.

The Israeli government has condemned Spain, Ireland and Norway, saying they were sending a message to the Palestinians that “terrorism pays off”, in reference to the Islamist group Hamas.

Tel Aviv later summoned the ambassadors of the three countries to protest and warned there would be “further, more serious consequences”.
