The increase is due to the "continuous rise in fraud crimes" and, in particular, "fraud involving telecommunications and cyber fraud," said Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak, in an assessment of crime.

Between January and March, 656 cases of fraud were recorded, which represents an increase of 50.8% compared to the same period in 2023.

Crimes against property, which include fraud, increased by 23.9%, to 2,186 cases, compared to the first three months of last year. Notably, there was a 28.9% increase in theft crimes (totaling 558 cases); a 655.6% increase in usury crimes (68); an 8.5% increase in unlawful appropriation (521) and a 50% increase in robbery (12).

Violent crime also increased (24.2%), although "in the context of serious violent crimes, such as kidnapping, homicide and serious bodily harm," Macau continues to "maintain a zero rate or a very low rate," said Wong.

The Secretary for Security also noted that the crime figures for the period under review are higher than those for the first quarter of 2019, even before the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the "rapid increase in fraud cases." However, Wong pointed out that "cases relating to other types of crimes, namely serious violent crimes, are significantly lower than those recorded before the epidemic."

Macau has adopted a 'zero-Covid' policy, imposing strict anti-pandemic measures until the end of 2022, including border restrictions, quarantines of up to 28 days and several population-wide tests.

The government also indicated today that crime related to the gaming sector "showed a certain increase" in the first quarter, with 351 cases, compared to 158 in the same period last year.

"It is believed that the reason is related to the substantial increase in the number of tourists and the recovery of the gaming industry," reads a report on the impact of gaming on Macau's security, released today.

However, the document indicates that the figure is lower than in the same period of 2019, "reflecting the success of the police's targeted prevention and combat work."

Macau recorded the entry of more than 8.8 million visitors in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 79.4% compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service.
