The ship was "hit by three missiles about 54 nautical miles southwest of Hodeida," Ambrey said.
The vessel sent a distress signal "indicating that its cargo hold had been damaged and that it was taking on water," he added, quoted by French news agency AFP. The ship's flag and whether there were any casualties was not immediately known. Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels have been targeting vessels linked to Israel in support of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas amid its ongoing war with Israel in the Gaza Strip. The Huthis' actions have forced many ship operators to suspend sailings through Red Sea shipping lanes. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), container shipping through the Red Sea has fallen by almost 30 percent in a year. Before the war, between 12 and 15 percent of global trade passed through the Red Sea route, according to the European Union (EU). Yemen, which has been at war for more than a decade, is considered the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula.
