The crossing has been known since the 2005 agreement (Palestinian Authority Withdrawal Plan) as the Philadelphi Corridor, and links the Palestinian enclave with Egyptian territory along a 14-kilometre strip.

The Israeli military said via the official army website that the military "operated overnight in the Philadelphi Corridor", where it said it targeted "terrorist targets and infrastructure" of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

"They are operating with precision on the ground and according to intelligence indicating the presence of terrorist targets in the area," the Israeli military said.

Hamas took control of the crossing after taking over the enclave in fighting between Palestinians in 2007, after elections the previous year that removed the Palestinian Authority from Gaza.

Egypt, which has had a peace treaty with Israel since 1979, has previously warned Israel against operating in the area of the border corridor.

The Israeli military took control of the Palestinian side of Rafah on 7 May, as part of an offensive against the city launched a day after it rejected a Hamas-backed ceasefire proposal put forward by Egypt and Qatar, which led to the suspension of aid deliveries through the crossing.

Tensions have been running high since May, as the Israeli offensive has intensified, despite international appeals and an order from the International Court of Justice to halt the attacks.

On Monday, an Egyptian soldier was killed in an exchange of fire in the area, prompting fresh warnings from the government in Cairo.

The incident came hours after some 45 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli bombardment of a displacement camp in Rafah, which was located in one of the "safe zones" designated by the Israeli authorities.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said its forces had carried out operations on Monday in Jabalia, in northern Gaza, and had "expanded activities" in the centre of the enclave.

Israel launched its offensive against Gaza after Hamas attacks on 7 October last year that left some 1,200 dead and 240 injured.

The Israeli offensive has left more than 36,000 Palestinians dead, according to the Hamas-run authorities in Gaza, as well as 510 dead on the Israeli side from Palestinian attacks and settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
