"The lack of transparency and loyalty to the government's partner is very serious," said Yolanda Díaz, who is also one of the vice-presidents of the Spanish executive, a left-wing coalition formed by the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Sumar.
"We requested information about these very high amounts [more than one billion euros] to find out what the hell we are talking about. They have not answered us to this day and yesterday it was published by a media outlet," added the minister, who was speaking to Spanish public television RTVE. Yolanda Díaz said that this "lack of loyalty to the Spanish people" is also "very serious", stressed that "the Defense policy is very important" and argued that parties and citizens "have the right to a public debate", demanding that the agreement be submitted to the national parliament for consideration. The leader of Sumar considered that the PSOE "is denying the possibility of a democratic debate in the Congress of Deputies to know the scope of what is going to be done". "I don't know," she assured. The largest opposition party in Spain, the Popular Party (PP, right), also regretted the lack of information about the agreement signed with Ukraine, although it stressed that it supports all aid to Kiev. Spain will deliver military aid worth more than one billion euros to Ukraine, as part of a security agreement between the two countries, Pedro Sánchez announced on Monday, during the official visit to Madrid by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, said today that he was surprised by the controversy generated around this agreement and called for responsibility. "Aid cannot be delayed for a single day," he said, at a press conference in Madrid after the meeting of the Spanish Council of Ministers. Albares said that he had spent months providing information on the negotiations with Ukraine in parliamentary committees and no party "raised any doubts, asked a question or expressed any opposition". The minister expressed surprise "at all this controversy" and asked for speeches to focus on the essential, stressing that "the very existence of Ukraine is at risk if this Russian war of aggression triumphs". "This sense of urgency means that aid must be provided at this time and cannot be delayed for a single day," he said.
