Pope Francis apologized on Tuesday for using a homophobic slur in a private meeting with Italian bishops on May 20, where he reportedly said that there was “too much faggotry” among seminarians.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni issued a statement acknowledging the media storm that erupted after the pontiff’s words were reported by Italian media.

According to Bruni, Francis is aware of the controversy and apologizes, stressing that he “did not intend to offend” anyone.

"The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and apologizes to those who were offended by the use of a term that was reported by others,” reads the statement, which clarifies that the remarks were made during a “closed-door conversation with the bishops of the Italian Episcopal Conference.”

The Vatican statement also recalls that the Argentine pope has worked to make the Church more welcoming to LGBTQ+ Catholics and that, as he has “stated on many other occasions,” he believes that “in the Catholic Church there is a place for everyone, no one is useless, no one is superfluous.”
