"The other countries (...) have asked us to hold back on donating the Gripen system," Defense Ministry spokesman Pål Jonson told AFP in a text message.

The decision was announced in Brussels, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on Tuesday signed a bilateral cooperation agreement that includes Belgium delivering 30 F-16 jets by 2028.

"Our coalition partners (...) emphasize that the simultaneous introduction of two new combat aircraft systems is highly complex and that we should now focus on introducing the F-16 system in the Ukrainian Air Force," Jonson explained.

The Netherlands and Denmark are leading a coalition of 11 countries that have pledged to deliver the US-made fighter jets to Ukraine, as well as to train Ukrainian pilots to operate them.

Another obstacle to a possible delivery of Gripens to Kyiv is the lack of "available Ukrainian pilots," the Swedish spokesman said.

Last September, the Swedish government announced that Ukrainian pilots had successfully completed initial training on the Gripen.

"We do not exclude the possibility of sending Gripens at a later stage, but the focus now is on the F-16 system," he added.

Ukrainian pilots and technicians are currently undergoing training in Denmark on the F-16.

Sweden has more than 90 JAS 39 Gripen combat aircraft, manufactured by Saab.

Ukraine has relied on Western allies for financial and military aid since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.
