The body of a five-month-old baby was found on Tuesday when about 85 migrants, who were traveling on a boat from Tunisia to Italy, were rescued from danger at sea.
According to a witness, in statements to the Reuters agency, the girl, her mother and her four-year-old sister were on a boat in unnavigable conditions, which was traveling with an excess of migrants that had left Sfax, in Tunisia, two days before, bound for Italy.
SOS Humanity officials found many of the migrants exhausted and suffering from nausea and fuel burns when they were rescued at dawn today, according to a statement from the association quoted by Reuters.
About 185 migrants rescued in different operations during this week - including those tonight - were taken to the port of Livorno, in northwestern Italy.
Another 120 migrants were transferred by a coast guard boat to the Italian island of Lampedusa, in the southern Mediterranean.
It should be recalled that Tunisia is facing a serious migrant crisis and has replaced Libya as the main starting point for people fleeing in the hope of finding a better life in Europe.
On the other hand, Italy has tried to stop the arrival of migrants from Africa, making it difficult for ships to operate in the Mediterranean Sea, limiting the number of rescues that can be carried out and forcing them to make large detours to bring the migrants ashore.
