The Fujikawaguchiko city government, which installed a screen to block the view of Mount Fuji in order to break up large gatherings of tourists taking photos, has discovered holes in the screen and is working to repair them.

According to the city government, cited by the Associated Press, the screen was put in place last Tuesday, but the next day officials discovered a hole in it.

On Tuesday, officials found 10 more similar holes, all at about eye level and large enough to fit a camera lens.

The viewpoint became popular because it features the iconic volcano behind a branch of the popular Japanese convenience store chain Lawson.

Local residents complained that visitors were blocking the narrow sidewalk and spilling into the busy street or onto neighboring properties to take pictures.

The city spent 1.3 million yen (about $12,000) to install the 8-foot-high black screen, which stretches 65 feet across, and additional fencing along the sidewalk.

The screen has helped ease the congestion in the area. However, overtourism has also become a growing problem at other popular tourist destinations in Japan, such as Kyoto and Kamakura.
