At the courthouse entrance, Trump -- who is running as the Republican candidate to try to return to the White House in the presidential elections next November -- once again criticized the legal situation in which he is involved, claiming that this is "a trial that should not have happened."

Trump also criticized the judge presiding over the trial, Juan Merchan, calling him corrupt and adding that this is "a dangerous day for America."

After six weeks of intense debates in the courtroom, the defense and the prosecution have one last chance today to convince the jury -- seven men and five women called to decide on this case with political risks for the Republican candidate in the November 5 elections.

The New York Public Ministry alleges that the 45th president of the United States (2017-2021) was in fact guilty of falsifying the accounting documents of his group of companies, the Trump Organization, to conceal a payment to pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels to avoid a sex scandal at the end of his 2016 presidential campaign.

Prosecutors insist that through this payment -- which they compare to a hidden campaign expense -- Donald Trump corrupted the 2016 election by buying the actress's silence about a sexual relationship that she claims to have had with him in 2006, when he was already married to Melania.

Donald Trump denies having had any sexual relationship with Stormy Daniels and presents himself as the victim of a political cabal, having refused to give any testimony during the trial.

Today, the defense will once again try to question the credibility of the main prosecution witness, Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's former lawyer, to sow doubts in the jury, which can only convict the former president if there is a unanimous decision.

After the closing arguments, Judge Juan Merchan will entrust the jurors, perhaps as early as Wednesday, with the task of deciding whether they consider the former US head of state guilty or innocent.

If they fail to reach a unanimous agreement, the trial will have to be repeated.

If found guilty, the 77-year-old Republican presidential candidate could appeal and, in any case, appear on the ballots on November 5.
