"The pier will take at least a week to repair and reconstruct," Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said during a press briefing, adding that the United States will "resume" delivering humanitarian aid after that.
The United States, Israel's main military backer, moved to install the pier off the coast of Gaza mid-month amid heavy Israeli restrictions on the delivery of aid by land to the Palestinian territory, which has been devastated by more than seven months of war.
"Once repairs and reconstruction of the pier are complete, the intent is to re-anchor the temporary pier off the coast of Gaza and resume delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need," he added, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
It is not the first setback for the US pier. On Saturday, four US military boats used to ferry supplies to the pier ran aground due to rough seas, according to US Central Command (Centcom).
According to the United Nations, nearly all of the 2.4 million residents of the Gaza Strip have been displaced by the fighting and bombardment, and face food insecurity, with the risk of widespread hunger.
